What’s in the name?
Davy Jane’s
You may recognize Davy Jones from the Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean, but his history with the Navy long predates that. Known as the mythical and rather evil ruler of the high seas, this has often led to sailors referring to the bottom of the ocean as “Davy Jones Locker”. In the Navy‘s anthem they sing “Anchors Aweigh, sail on to victory, and sink their bones to Davy Jones, Hooray!” Here at Davy Jane’s, we seek to empower women, and knowing that women truly rule the great waves of the ocean, we used a play on words, changing the name from Davy Jones to Davy Jane’s, a heroine you wouldn’t dread to meet.
Bluejackets
This part of the name is taken from the Navy’s Bluejacket’s Manual. The book, first published in 1902, is considered the Navy’s Bible and is handed out to every sailor at bootcamp. It is a training guide, and is rich in Naval history and tradition, now on its 26th edition. The title of the book stems from enlisted sailors being referred to as “bluejackets".”
